English inventor Henry Bessemer’s US patent for the Manufacture of Iron and Steel. Henry Bessemer is well-known for inventing the first process to mass-produce steel inexpensively. This patent, however, was appealed by US inventor William Kelly who claimed he had devised this process years earlier, although he had not filed for a patent. Kelly’s appeal was successful and he obtained his patent in 1857. While a significant debate surrounds this topic, the process is most notably referred to as the “Bessemer Process”, though at times it is referred to as the “Bessemer-Kelly Process”
